Tropical Storm Erin forms over the eastern tropical Atlantic

The fifth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, Tropical Storm Erin, formed over the eastern tropical Atlantic on Monday morning. Erin is the first “Cabo Verde” type tropical cyclone of the year, which are typically long-lived tropical cyclones that form from African easterly waves off the coast of west Africa. Erin is no imminent threat to land, and is expected to intensify into the first hurricane (and potentially first major hurricane) of the 2025 season over the coming days.

As of 2:00 p.m. CVT (11:00 a.m. EDT) Monday, Tropical Storm Erin was centered near 17.4°N 28.0°W, and was moving westward at approximately 20 mph. Maximum sustained winds were 40 knots (45 mph), with an estimated minimum pressure of 1004 mb. Erin’s precursor wave has already caused flooding in Cabo Verde, which has been attributed to at least 7 fatalities. Although intensification in the short term may be slow due to marginal sea surface temperatures, Erin is expected to be in a low-shear environment for the next few days as sea surface temperatures gradually get warmer. As a result, intensification is forecast, and Erin is likely to become a hurricane in a few days over the central tropical Atlantic. In a week or so, Erin is likely to be a large, powerful hurricane over the western Atlantic, though it remains too soon to definitively say Erin will recurve out to sea. Currently, most of the model guidance indicates Erin will likely pass well north of the Lesser Antilles and east of the United States east coast. Interests in the northern Leeward Islands, as well as the northeastern Caribbean, the United States east coast, Atlantic Canada and Bermuda should closely monitor the progress of Erin in case the forecast changes.
