Tropical Storm Chantal forms off the southeastern United States coast

Tropical Storm Chantal, the third named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, formed Saturday morning due east of the Georgia coastline. Chantal could strengthen slightly today before it moves inland into northeastern South Carolina tomorrow morning.

National Hurricane Center forecast cone for Tropical Storm Chantal.

As of 11:00 a.m. EDT Saturday, Tropical Storm Chantal was centered near 31.1°N 78.7°W, and was moving northward at 1 mph. Maximum sustained winds were 35 knots (40 mph), with an estimated minimum pressure of 1007 mb. Chantal is a sheared tropical cyclone, with the low-level circulation mostly exposed to the west of a deep convective mass. Although the shear is expected to decrease slightly today, dry air and upper level convergence are likely to limit significant intensification. Chantal’s low level circulation is expected to make landfall over northeastern South Carolina early Sunday morning. Since Chantal is a sheared tropical cyclone and the strongest winds are east of the center, the heaviest impacts will be east of the landfall location.

A Tropical Storm Warning is currently in effect from South Santee River, SC to Surf City, NC, while a Tropical Storm Watch is currently in effect from Edisto Beach to South Santee River, SC.
