Tropical Storm Andrea forms over the central Atlantic

The first named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, Tropical Storm Andrea, formed this morning over the Central Atlantic Ocean. Andrea is a very disorganized tropical storm in only a marginally favorable environment, and is expected to be a short-lived cyclone. Andrea is no threat to land.

As of 11:00 a.m. EDT Tuesday, Tropical Storm Andrea was centered near 36.6°N 48.9°W, and was moving east-northeastward at 17 mph. Maximum sustained winds were 35 knots (40 mph), with an estimated minimum pressure of 1014 mb. Andrea has already moving into cooler waters and vertical shear is expected to increase further, so Andrea should degenerate into a remnant low either late today or early tomorrow. Andrea’s formation is very close to the long-term average for the first storm formation in the Atlantic basin, which normally occurs around June 20th. Regardless, Andrea is still the latest first named storm in the Atlantic basin since Arthur in 2014.
